Alex Palou (Teo Martin Motorsport) completed a sensational World Series Formula V8 3.5 debut today at the Nürburgring, being the first rookie in 2017 to achieve the pole. A late addition to the roster of the Madrid-based Teo Martin and his eponymous team, the Spaniard eased to pole in a damp Qualifying 1 session.
As the pit-lane got open, rain was reported in turn four and the stewards declared the whole track and the session wet. All the cars went on-track on a short call with Palou putting together the fastest lap in 1’42”174 to top Pietro Fittipaldi (Lotus). The Brazilian will have a good chance to increase his championship lead in tomorrow’s race 1.
Russian Matevos Isaakyan (SMP Racing by AVF) scored third place heading an extremely tight pack which included Sahara Force India Formula 1 driver Alfonso Celis Jr (Fortec Motorsports). Egor Orudzhev (SMP Racing by AVF) ended up in P5 and was the only man to improve on slick tires later in the session, moving past Israeli racer Roy Nissany (RP Motorsport).
The Saturday schedule will feature, alongside the FIA WEC round, the second Qualifying session at 12:35. The start of race 1 will be at 16:10 with Palou on the pole.
Alex Palou (Teo Martin Motorsport)
“Conditions were tricky and we had just one set of tyres in normal conditions. Then it started to rain. We didn’t know if we had the pole until the end, but at least we made it. We’ll try to win and we’re working for it”.
Pietro Fittipaldi (Lotus)
“Qualifying was a bit complicated due to the rain. We went out, and with all the traffic it was pretty difficult to run in free air. I think we were not far though. We didn’t take the risk, but tomorrow we will have another session, hopefully it will be dry, and we want to improve”.
Matevos Isaakyan (SMP Racing by AVF)
“We’ve got some pretty good luck setting third place. We struggled a lot with the engine during the day, but in the first stint I collected as much as I could, then the rain came so we’re happy with this result”.
